Kickboxing Workouts - The Importance Of
Katas
In this article
we examine the importance of kickboxing techniques to a physical workout. Why most people equate this to a
more rigorous exercise and think it helps with keeping fit only, the real benefit is strengthening the mind
and that is why we have chosen to review the fundamentals in kata training during a kickboxing
workout.
At the time kata was
developed in ancient China, your very life depended on your ability to apply the techniques & concepts they
contained, & in some instances this is still true today for the art of kickboxing. The harsh training regime
that the old masters put themselves through made it possible for them to be victorious in physical
confrontation. This was not just through mastery of the techniques & concepts, but through mastery of
themselves. Mastery of the mind. What they noticed however was that the bye product of all this was an ability
to deal with whatever life threw at them. Due to their iron will nothing presented a problem to them, they had
learnt how to deal with adversity & conquer it.
The only way to
develop an iron will is to put yourself in very uncomfortable situations, make yourself face adversity. Most
people don’t want to face adversity but this is what allows us to grow as people. For most of us this means
pushing ourselves beyond the point of physical endurance via some form of exercise. This forces you to make the
body obey the mind, not the other way around.
It also teaches you
to ignore the negative thoughts that will creep into your mind as you are training such as, “you’ve done enough,
just stop”, “how much longer” or “why am I doing this”, one which enters my mind quite regularly!! It forces you
to focus on the task in hand, putting all of your will into completing the task at hand. These are opportunities
for us to grow mentally, allowing us to develop that all important mindset needed for self
offence.
Many people use the
katas & techniques extracted from the katas as the form of exercise with which to develop will power. This
way one is associated with the other. I practice the techniques within the katas as they are presented,
separately & in two person drills. This way one can perfect the techniques individually, then move them onto
full unrestricted sparring trying to apply them to a wholly resistant partner. This type of training is not easy
& not for everyone, but the benefits to be gained from it are huge.
Hopefully after a
period of continual training you too will develop an iron will, which will augment your techniques making you
capable of defending yourself from the most vicious attacker.
The importance of
basic qualities for making the most out of their karate and their dealings with daily life. These are qualities such as patience, persistence, respect, humility, self
discipline, good sportsmanship, courage and confidence, that encourages actions during a kickboxing workout.
